If you are planning to deploy a new digital signage system but cannot decide where to place the screens, this guide may help clear up your questions. Although every space has a different architectural layout, the underlying objectives are essentially the same. To get the best results from a digital signage system, screens should be placed in the most visible areas within the environment, especially in high-traffic locations.
If you are planning to set up a new digital signage system but cannot decide on the best location for the displays, this guide may help answer your questions.
Although every venue has a different architectural layout, the underlying goals are essentially the same. To get the best performance out of the digital signage system you install, you need to place the displays in the most visible areas of the space.
1. Choose Crowded, High-Traffic Areas
Think about where the busiest spot in your venue is and where people tend to gather. Place your displays in the areas where the most people are present. High-traffic zones with constant foot traffic, such as entrances and waiting areas, are usually the best choice.
In spaces with constant foot traffic and passage, the content on the displays needs to change more quickly. You should design your content accordingly. If a display is located in a transition area, the content there should be fast-changing, because people only pass in front of the display for a few seconds. Within that short time frame, content transitions play a key role in ensuring that the intended message gets across.
In places like waiting rooms, however, the situation is different. In such areas, content can change more slowly and cover the subject in more depth, because people waiting there already have enough time to watch it.
2. Position Digital Displays at Eye Level
You need to position your displays at a height where people can comfortably see them. Even if the content on your displays is excellent, it will have no impact if the displays are not placed in easily visible areas.
When positioning the displays, factors such as height and viewing angle must be taken into account. Content should be displayed at eye level so that it is easy to read, easy to watch and naturally discoverable. If the displays are outside the viewer's natural line of sight, people may have to bend down or stretch up to see them. To avoid such issues, analyse the location carefully and set the displays at the most suitable height. If necessary, ask people of different heights to test the setup and confirm that it looks correct.
3. Plan the Wi-Fi or Wired Connection Carefully
You need to plan in advance how you will provide the network connection at the locations where the displays will be placed. If you are going to use Wi-Fi, the coverage area should be surveyed beforehand, and Wi-Fi routers may need to be deployed at closer intervals if required. Some display types are housed in metal enclosures, which can reduce signal strength, and magnetic fields from high-voltage cables can also interfere with Wi-Fi signals.
If you encounter issues with the wireless network, you can also use a wired connection, as almost every digital signage player supports Ethernet. If you plan to turn your displays on and off remotely, keep in mind that the Wake-on-LAN wake-up signal only works on a wired connection, so this should not be overlooked. In a digital signage system, if your Wi-Fi routers do not provide a strong signal, the most reliable connection method is wired Ethernet.
