Knowledge BaseMarch 1, 2014

A video wall is a large display created by arranging multiple screens side by side or stacked, producing resolution and image quality that goes far beyond standard formats. The most important principle when building a video wall is that the bezels of the displays must be as narrow as possible to minimize visible gaps in the active area. Video walls can be built using LCD or LED industrial panels, typically using the same display type throughout.

Video walls are massive displays created by arranging multiple screens side by side or on top of each other, capable of delivering resolution and image quality well beyond standard levels.

The narrow bezels of the screens that make up a video wall are the most important factor in preventing loss of image in the active area. The industrial panels used in a video wall can be based on either LCD or LED technology, and the same type of screen is typically used throughout a given video wall.

Video wall products are generally preferred for larger-than-usual spaces. Common use cases include trade fairs, shopping malls, stadiums, airports, control rooms, news studios and large public venues.

Video walls, created by arranging multiple panels in various matrix configurations, are widely used for many purposes, particularly advertising and promotion. The panels used in video walls are commonly 46" and 55" in size.

In the early days, video walls were built by placing plasma screens side by side; from 2010 onwards, narrow-bezel panels specifically designed for video walls began to be produced. Before that, video wall systems were mostly built using thick-bezel plasma panels. In the example below, you can see the difference between video walls built with thick-bezel and thin-bezel screen groups.

Looking at the two images above, you can see that in the thick-bezel video wall on the right there are clear image shifts and losses at the bezel joints, whereas on thin-bezel video walls these issues are minimised. As panel bezels get thicker, image distortion and misalignment become more likely. For these reasons, narrow-bezel video wall solutions are now the preferred choice.
